Have you ever wondered how humans can dive into deep water for extended periods of time without any breathing apparatus? Perhaps you’ve wondered whether there really are differences between snorkeling and freediving. Here are the solutions to some of the most commonly asked questions on learning to free dive.

What Is Freediving?

Diverting into deep seas with just one breath, without breathing apparatus in freediving gear is known as freediving. Freedivers employ inward control, discipline, and strength to descend into the ocean as they hold their breath until they surface. Freediving is both a recreation and sporting activity, with numerous freediving tournaments regularly held across the globe.

What Is the Difference Between Snorkeling and Freediving?

Although both freediving and snorkeling require similar equipment, the two are very different. Snorkelers sit on the surface of the ocean, looking down using their masks while breathing through snorkels. Freedivers, however, dive beneath the surface of the water, holding their breaths until they surface. The snorkels used by freedivers are used only near the surface of the water, and then remove the snorkel before they descend.

If I Can’t Hold My Breath for a Long Time Does That Mean I Can’t Freedive?

This is among the most popular misconceptions about freediving. If you are properly trained it is possible to learn breath-hold techniques that are likely to leave you amazed by the length of time you can keep your breath.

Do I Need to Know How to Swim?

While you don’t need to become an Olympic swimmer to take the course, it is essential that you are confident when you are in the water. To be a Freediver you’ll need to be able to swim 200 meters/218 yards. The swim is untimed and is able to be completed with any stroke, so it’s possible to take your time. Also, you’ll have to learn several breath-hold methods, some of which involve swimming underwater or at depth.

How Old Do I Need to Be to Start Freediving?

To enroll in this Freediver course you must be at minimum 15 years old. If you’re less than 15 and wish to learn you can freedive, we have modified courses to choose from. Anyone aged 12 or older is able to enroll in the Basic Freediver course. Likewise, anyone 8 years or older or older may begin your Skin Diver course.

How Long Does It Take to Get Certified?

Courses are constructed so that the skills required can be mastered irrespective of set time periods. For some, these skills easy to master while others may require some time. Whatever your ability the Freediver class will make sure that you have the required skills needed to safely free dive.
